PSORIASIS

Inflammatory skin disease psoriasis is characterized by well-delineated red and scaly plaques, which are generally associated with genetic, immunological, metabolic, and endocrinal etiologies. With a prevalence rate of 2% to 4%, psoriasis, especially plaque psoriasis, may have considerable detrimental effects on the quality of life. Patients with psoriasis also usually suffer from anxiety and depression due to pruritus symptoms, sleep disturbance, etc. Furthermore, patients with psoriasis may have a significantly increased risk of myocardial infarction and peripheral vascular disease because of accelerated atherosclerosis in an inflammatory state.

Acupuncture, one of the

Acupuncture, one of the complementary and alternative nonpharmacological therapies, has been commonly used in managing psoriasis, pruritus, and dermatitis. It is associated with a low risk of side effects and adverse reactions. The review reported that acupuncture might reduce itching by accelerating the microcirculation of the local lesion area, which is conducive to the extinction of inflammation and the absorption of metabolites. According to the study, acupuncture may also improve immunity, stimulate the meridian, and repair skin lesions, thus preventing chronic recurrent seizures from occurring. Meta-analysis suggested that acupuncture may be advantageous in avoiding regular recurrent episodes compared with conventional medications; the meta-analysis reported that acupuncture might be beneficial in managing psychosocial abnormalities, including anxiety, depression, and so on. It also is associated with a lower recurrence rate of psoriasis. However, the effects of acupuncture in the management of psoriasis are still inconsistent, especially in psychosocial abnormality due to psoriasis. Most of the results come from observational studies or case reports. There is poor methodological quality in published randomized controlled trials (RCT), especially in blinding.

The disease is not important. The “patient” is important, because the patient has created the disease. The cause is in the patient; the disease is only a symptom. You can change the symptom, and another symptom will come up. You can force this disease by drugs, you can stop its expression, but then the disease will assert itself somewhere else and with more danger, more force – with a vengeance. So we will feel the “patient.” As we all aware education and experience equality important. But most important to get in tune with the “patient” and find the cause using both western and eastern medicine. We care and will build a rapport; and create a bridge on your healing journey!

    The theory of TCM

The theory of traditional Chinese medicine states that psoriasis should be primarily a “blood stasis” syndrome. Acupuncture may promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, and regulate qi and blood circulation. The studies showed that acupuncture has beneficial effects on treating plaque psoriasis.
