INSOMNIA

Insomnia is common to sleep disorders, with a prevalence of 40% in adults. It is generally believed that 10%–15% of adults suffer from severe insomnia, and an additional 25%–35% have transient or occasional insomnia. The symptoms of insomnia may be difficulty falling asleep, sleep latency of more than thirty minutes, or sleep efficiency of less than 85%, which usually happens more than four nights a week and occurs at least three weeks.

Symptoms of Insomnia

Patients with insomnia may feel tired, tense, lazy, or have delayed reactions, distraction, or headaches. The severe consequence of insomnia can be mental illness; the worst is schizophrenia.

Insomnia can be treated with medications, herbal therapy, and psychological or physical therapy.

Common medications include hypnotic sedative agents, such as zaleplon and benzodiazepines. Still, they may cause adverse effects such as damage to memory, drug resistance, dependency, and addiction.

Nondrug Therapy

Nondrug therapy, including acupuncture, is commonly used by patients with insomnia. The mechanism of acupuncture treatment may regulate yin and yang to reinforce health and eliminate pathogenically, thus improving sleep. In modern medicine, acupuncture can increase the content of γ-amino butyric acid and enhance sleep quality.

Chinese Medicine View

Insomnia can be successfully treated with acupuncture, according to the World Health Organisation. Sleep problems are mostly related to Heart, Spleen, stomach, liver and kidney dysfunction. Blood is made from food essence and controlled by the Spleen to produce essence, which will be stored in the kidneys. Blood is stored in the liver and soothes the liver. Blood also transports essence from the kidneys to the Heart to nourish it. If these organs are in disharmony, excessive fire and Qi (the body’s essential energy) stagnation will occur and disturb the mind, which leads to insomnia.

The disease is not important. The “patient” is important, because the patient has created the disease. The cause is in the patient; the disease is only a symptom. You can change the symptom, and another symptom will come up. You can force this disease by drugs, you can stop its expression, but then the disease will assert itself somewhere else and with more danger, more force – with a vengeance. So we will feel the “patient.” As we all aware education and experience equality important. But most important to get in tune with the “patient” and find the cause using both western and eastern medicine. We care and will build a rapport; and create a bridge on your healing journey!

    Irregular food intake

    Irregular food intake can damage the Spleen and stomach and cause problems in blood and essence production, which will disturb sleep. Anxiety and overwork result in exhaustion, making the blood unable to nourish the Heart. Thus, insomnia follows.

    Congenital deficiency

    Congenital deficiency, sexual activity or a prolonged illness can lead to a failure of essence transportation between the kidneys and the Heart, causing heart fire that disturbs the mind. Emotional depression can lead to liver Qi stagnation (the liver’s vital energy) which will be transformed into a fire over time. Thus, insomnia occurs.

    Chinese Medicine Theory

    According to Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be prescribed to treat the various syndromes that cause insomnia. Often treatment aims to regulate the movement of Qi and restore harmony within the vital internal organs (including the Heart) as well as the balance between the cooling and the warming energies (the Yin and Yang) in the body to calm the mind and relieve insomnia.
