Chinese Medicine Aspects

A key aspect of Chinese medicine is its ability to treat each patient individually. Depending on who you are and what you’re going through, we might both suffer from acne but be treated differently with Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine always recommends meeting with a licensed practitioner who can diagnose your acne and differentiate it from other types.

The pathogens in the body are described using metaphors in Chinese medicine. The lung and stomach meridians are often associated with acne as ‘heat.’ in Chinese medicine, acne is treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, dietary recommendations, and exercise regimens.

The lung meridian

The lung meridian is located in the middle of the body, connecting the chest and the abdomen. As the stomach meridian travels through the chest, it begins at the face. If a patient overeats spicy, greasy, sweet or fried foods, dampness or undigested metabolites are created and transformed into heat. An excess of heat in the body rises to the face. Over time, this dampness can change into phlegm, which causes blood to stagnate and heat to build up.

The disease is not important. The “patient” is important, because the patient has created the disease. The cause is in the patient; the disease is only a symptom. You can change the symptom, and another symptom will come up. You can force this disease by drugs, you can stop its expression, but then the disease will assert itself somewhere else and with more danger, more force – with a vengeance. So we will feel the “patient.” As we all aware education and experience equality important. But most important to get in tune with the “patient” and find the cause using both western and eastern medicine. We care and will build a rapport; and create a bridge on your healing journey!

    According to Chinese Medicine

According to Chinese medicine, acne is caused by heat in the lungs and stomach and phlegm stagnation with dampness and blood stagnation. Acne on the face is likely to develop when the stomach and lungs are hot, and the skin will be oily or shiny as well. Patients with this pattern may also has dry mouth, thirst, constipation, and dark urine. Their tongue will be red. The treatment principle is to clear heat.

Herbs that may be used would be Scutellaria (Huang qin), Phellodenbrium (Huang Bai), Rehmannia root (sheng di), and Mu Dan Pi (tree peony root). Stagnant phlegm, dampness, or blood can cause red, clustered, and dark acne. A considerable interval will also pass between the appearance of sores. The treatment principle here is to activate blood circulation.

    A classic formula

A classic formula like Tao Hong Si Wu tang may be used along with herbs that circulate blood, like Angelic root (dang GUI), Peony root (bai shao), or red peony (Chi Shao).

As mentioned in the introduction, seeing a TCM Practitioner of Chinese medicine is your best bet for the successful treatment of acne.

    VARIOUS CAUSES OF ACNE

In western medicine, acne can be categorized into four types. First, the puberty type, which is an excessive sebum production from the rapid increase of the male hormones, resulting in clogged pores. Second is the adult type; when the dead skin cells clog inside the pores, it inhibits smooth sebaceous secretion. Third, the proliferation of P. Acnes, bacteria living in skin hair follicles that cause infection. That’s why antibiotics are used in the western treatment of acne. Fourth is when all of the above happen together, the sebaceous secretion increases, the pores become clogged, and P. Acne grows due to inflammation. Skin cell regenerates approximately every 27 days, and this means the rate at which inflammations are controlled is a direct variable of acne treatment and acne scar development.

Other factors may include hormonal fluctuation during the menstrual cycle and use of cosmetic products. 60-70% of female acne patients notice their acne worsen about a week before menstruation. And those who use cosmetic products that contain a higher content of milk fat or harsh chemicals are prone to acne. Seasonal factors also play a role, as people with skin that is sensitive to heat tend to have acne flare-ups in the summer.
