DIABETES

You or someone you know may have been affected by diabetes. In the U.S. alone, approximately 1.3 million people will be diagnosed with this condition this year. While it is generally a long-term condition, you can manage it with self-care, nutrition, and medication. It is also possible to treat diabetes and its symptoms through acupuncture, a safe, effective treatment. Health and well-being can be improved through acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is possible to use both safely and effectively your current medical treatment.

A complex condition requires an understanding.

The digestive process is how the body obtains energy from food. After food is digested, the blood is filled with glucose (or sugar). The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that transports glucose into muscle, fat, and liver cells. High blood sugar levels are caused by diabetes when the body produces insufficient insulin or does not respond appropriately to insulin.

Uncontrolled blood-sugar levels can cause severe complications, such as blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and amputation.

Types of diabetes can be divided into two categories.

Type I Diabetes

Usually diagnosed during childhood, type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease characterized by the attack of insulin-producing cells by the immune system. Daily insulin injections are generally necessary to treat symptoms that appear suddenly.

Type II Diabetes

Symptoms of Type II Diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing infections
  • Impotence in men

Diabetes type II accounts for 90-95% of all cases of diabetes and is usually diagnosed in adulthood. Family history, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, being overweight and sedentary are major risk factors.

Most people don't know ...

Most people don’t know they have diabetes because symptoms are mild, so getting tested regularly is essential, especially after age 45. Testing can also detect pre-diabetes, with high blood sugar but not yet at diabetic levels. With early detection and treatment, stopping the disease from progressing is far more accessible, controlling your symptoms and preventing complications. Treatments often include regular blood-sugar monitoring, medications to control blood sugar, and exercise and diet.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views diabetes as more than a simple Type I or Type II diagnosis.

You may discover and be treated for the following TCM diagnoses by your acupuncturist.

  • The upper wastes
  • The Middle Waste
  • Waste in the lower reaches
  • Deficiency of the spleen
  • Stagnation of liver Qi

It works by using a natural approach.

Fortunately, certain types of diabetes respond very well to acupuncture and other holistic healthcare options and lifestyle changes – sometimes even eliminating the need for medications.

Acupuncture and TCM can help lead you to a healthier lifestyle. Since diabetes impacts the whole body, finding a therapy that tackles the problem holistically makes sense.

Vital energy called Qi animates and protects the body. Meridians run throughout the body, nourishing the organs and glands with qi. It is possible for diabetes symptoms to appear when there is an imbalance or a blockage in the flow of Qi.

    Diabetes, according to TCM

Diabetes, according to TCM, is caused by an imbalance between Qi and Yin, also known as “Xiao Ke.” When Qi and Yin are imbalanced, heat is produced, which drains and consumes the body’s fluids. That is why heat-related symptoms include excessive thirst, irritability, itchy skin, dry mouth, and red, swollen gums.

Acupuncture uses fine, sterile needles along meridian paths to restore Qi flow and nourish Yin. As a result, symptoms can be relieved, pancreatic function can be improved, and blood sugar levels can be controlled. Your acupuncturist will also resolve other imbalances or concerns that may complicate the condition and may help with typical symptoms.

Herbal remedies, dietary changes, and exercise ...

Herbal remedies, dietary changes, and exercise plans may also be recommended in addition to acupuncture care.

Acupuncture and TCM address each patient’s needs in eliminating symptoms and potentially reducing the need for medication. The best approach to controlling your diabetes is by working with a team of healthcare providers who can address the many aspects of diabetes. Including an acupuncturist in your team—and working together to manage your diabetes—can have lasting benefits and help you live a healthy, active life.
